In 2019, The History of Icons was featured as a poster installation at the Graphic Matters biennial in Breda, Netherlands. This renowned event, celebrated for its commitment to innovation and creativity, offered a perfect platform to showcase the evolution of visual communication. The design of our posters drew inspiration from the original online project, historyoficons.com.

What is Graphic Matters?

Graphic Matters is more than just an event — it’s a global hub for graphic design enthusiasts, fostering thought-provoking conversations and creative exploration. The biennial features exhibitions, workshops, and talks led by some of the most influential designers in the industry. Each edition focuses on a specific theme, encouraging participants to use design as a tool for communication, change, and innovation.

The 2019 edition, aptly themed “Speak Up!”, placed a spotlight on the role of visual storytelling in addressing social, political, and cultural challenges. Designers from around the world were invited to channel their creativity into supporting public dialogue, advocating for change, and sharing diverse perspectives.

Our Contribution to “Speak Up!”

Our installation celebrated the power of icons as universal symbols of communication. Through our posters, we delved into the historical and cultural significance of icons, showcasing how they’ve evolved to transcend language barriers and foster global understanding.

The posters not only paid homage to the rich history of icons but also aligned seamlessly with the festival’s ethos. Each design reflected the festival’s core theme of “Speak Up!” by exploring how visual elements can challenge societal norms, spark conversations, and inspire action.

Why Icons Matter in Communication

Icons serve as the building blocks of visual language. They simplify complex ideas, evoke emotions, and foster connection across diverse audiences. Whether it’s a universally recognized peace sign or a modern-day app icon, their influence on human communication is unparalleled.

The History of Icons project aims to not only celebrate this legacy but also encourage designers to rethink how these symbols can be reimagined for contemporary issues.

A Lasting Impact

Participating in Graphic Matters 2019 was an unforgettable experience. It reaffirmed our belief in the transformative power of graphic design and its ability to amplify voices, challenge conventions, and promote meaningful change.

Our posters were more than just a visual display — they were a testament to the potential of design to foster understanding and drive action.
